Guiding Beliefs

Section 1. How Our Church Operates

The Church finds its guidance through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It further
finds guidance in the Holy Scriptures through reason, faith, conscience, and tradition.
We acknowledge that God is still speaking to us.

This Church is an independent ecclesiastical body, affiliated with the United Church of
Christ. It cooperates in the free fellowship of member churches, seeking advice and
assistance in the spirit of Christian love and fellowship.

The government of this Church is vested in its Members, who shall have the right of
control in all its affairs. It is subject to the Laws of the State of New Jersey relating to
Religious Societies and Congregations and to Corporations - Not for Profit.

Section 2. Mission Statement

The Mission Statement of this Church shall be as follows:

Jesus tells us to love God with all our heart and soul and mind, and our neighbor as
ourselves.

Inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus, we gather as a community where questioning, listening, and learning leads us toward faith and understanding.

We promise to support each other's relationship with God and encourage each
individual's calling.

We strive to be compassionate and to minister to those in need. We work to right injustice and advance peace.

We seek to be good stewards of God's creation.

We endeavor to live our faith both inside and outside our doors.

All are invited to participate in the life of our Church. We are a loving, open-minded,
caring, dedicated Church on a journey to learn, laugh, discover, grow, and worship God
together. We invite you to experience our genuine, friendly, and fun hospitality.

Section 3. Resolutions

3a. Open and Affirming Resolution of 2008

Cresskill Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, is an Open and Affirming
community. We find our guidance through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and
continue to honor the principle that discrimination is incompatible with Christ's Gospel of unconditional love.

We believe and affirm that every person has worth as a unique creation made in the image of God. We therefore welcome into the life of our church all persons, including but not limited to those of every race, culture, age, gender, socio-economic status, physical or mental ability, marital status, faith, and sexual orientation such as those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

We specifically welcome and affirm participation in our worship services and sacraments, celebration of life and commitment ceremonies, service as teachers in all facets of Christian Education, and participation in all Church activities, boards, and committees, regardless of sexual orientation. As part of our commitment, we affirm equal opportunity employment for all.

We believe with the theologian-philosopher Henri Nouwen that "true liberation is freeing people from the bonds that have prevented them from giving their gifts to others." We rejoice in committing ourselves to further learning and advocacy to end oppression, discrimination, intolerance, and lack of understanding of any specific group of persons.

3b. Greening Resolution of 2009

We resolve that every Board and Committee of the Cresskill Congregational Church, UCC, make an effort to include recycling and other "green" elements into their planning of activities. Furthermore, we recommend that all organizations, groups, or businesses that use our church building for their meetings or events agree to include recycling and greening efforts into their planning and functions.

3c. Just Peace Resolution of 2013

At our annual meeting on Thursday, June 20, 2013, we voted to become a Just Peace
congregation. We approved the following resolution:

We, the members of the Cresskill Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, respond to the call of the "Just Peace Pronouncement" approved by the 1985 General Synod of the United Church of Christ. The Synod defines “Just Peace" as the interrelation of friendship, justice, and common security from violence."

In making this resolution, let it be known that we also strive to be good stewards of God's creation, working to sustain the world and not harm the environment. We are a
community of worship and celebration centered in the teachings of Jesus Christ and His message and teachings of justice and peace. We affirm that all nations should work
together to help people meet their basic needs of food and clean water, adequate health care, decent housing, meaningful employment, basic education, freedom of worship and protection of rights.

As a “Just Peace Church” we commit ourselves to Spiritual Development, Just Peace
Education, Political Advocacy and Community Witness in the following ways:

Spiritual Development

We are committed to nurturing and supporting each other in our search for a Just Peace through prayer, study of Scriptures, theological reflection, and worship. We will strive to maintain our own wellness and bring more awareness to our own inner journeys to better continue God's work.

Just Peace Education

We will develop informational programs on Just Peace issues and will maintain a climate where all points of view that are expressed can be respected in the search for new answers and directions. We will have a Just Peace Committee as part of the Outreach Board whose objective is to explore Just Peace issues and provide information on Just Peace issues to the congregation, including the children.

Political Advocacy

Recognizing that Just Peace is both a religious and a political concept we will encourage each other to be politically conscious. A member of the Just Peace Committee will keep in close contact with the UCC Justice and Peace Ministry and the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network to follow critical Just Peace issues and alert the congregation when it is most appropriate to write or call elected government officials or take other actions.

Community Witness

We will encourage our members to be involved in local Just Peace initiatives such as the Cresskill food bank (presently known as Cresskill Cares), Family Promise of Bergen County, and other organizations with Just Peace objectives.

We celebrate our Open and Affirming Church and support the Rainbow Cafe NNJ program for LGBTQ+ youth to promote acceptance and well-being. We will seek out other Just Peace issues in our communities that we can become involved in and support.

We will strive to make our convictions known throughout our community and throughout other UCC churches. We will engage in outreach, inviting others to join in our activities.

Our mission in becoming a Just Peace Church is exemplified by the Prayer of St. Francis.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
0 Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Section 4. Covenant

The covenant binding members of this Church shall be as follows:

We covenant with God and one another to seek the many ways in which God is
made known to us.

We seek that presence in Jesus the Christ, in the Bible, in worship, in each other,
in ourselves, and in our everyday world.

We share the blessings of God that flow among us and accept the cost and joy of
serving the whole human family.

We will pray for and with each other.

We will seek to love one another, even when we disagree.

We commit ourselves to this way of life, trusting God's grace.
