SUNDAY SCHOOL

A fun and joyful way for children to come together and learn about God’s love! Everyone is welcome at any time!

WHEN IS IT HELD?

Sunday mornings, 10am to 11am, mid-September through mid-June.  Sunday School continues in the summer when possible.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

  • We have an “open door policy” and all children are welcome on any Sunday.

  • Children first attend the church service upstairs in the sanctuary with their families.

  • About 15 minutes after the service begins, kids are invited downstairs to attend Sunday School, which is held in the Sunday School room.

  • At 11:00 a.m., children meet their families upstairs after service for refreshments and fellowship.

Children who prefer to stay with their families during the church service are offered Busy Bags to make them feel welcome.

WHAT IS SUNDAY SCHOOL AT CRESSKILL UCC?

  • Several professional teachers volunteer to plan and teach the lessons on alternating Sundays.

  • Children’s lessons usually open with a scripture-based mini-lesson, followed by a craft, song, game or activity, and a closing prayer that reinforces what we learned in the lesson.

  • Lessons for kids usually follow the same lectionary that the pastor does for the congregation, so most often children will hear the same story (at an appropriate age level) as the regular church sermon; this gives families the opportunity to share ideas about what they learned in church on Sunday.

YOUTH (AGES 12+)

  • Confirmation class: teenagers meet with the Pastor on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as schedules allow.

  • Each confirmand is sponsored by an adult member of the church of their choosing for guidance and support.

  • At the end of the program, each confirmand presents a statement of their faith during the Worship service with a celebration to follow.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE

Children (and those who feel young at heart : ) are invited up to the altar steps as Pastor Kendall or a Christian Ed teacher relates the gospel reading in a way that even the youngest child can understand. This brief, upbeat, interactive session is a highlight of the service and underscores the inclusive mission of our church family. Everyone feels a part of the service!
