Sandwich Line

Jesus said, “When you do something unto another person, it is as if you are doing it unto me, too.”

Every weekday, 24-30 men gather at several locations, in Dumont and in Bergenfield. There they wait, often all day and always in every kind of weather, in hopes that they will be hired to do a day’s work. This work is usually very physical and does not pay well, but they hope to earn enough to help or support their families.

They often do not bring or buy a lunch, in order to save their miniscule pay as much as possible. To this end, our Sandwich Line meets weekly to make, package, and distribute a lunch to these day workers.

The men receive a sandwich, bottle of water, chips, a piece of fruit, and cookies. They also get--probably just as important--a smile and kind words from folks “on the line.”

This winter and last, the group has also distributed warm gloves and hats that our congregation has donated.

HOW TO SUPPORT

  • Financial donations are urgently needed to provide the food and packing materials needed to continue this mission

  • Contacts at food sources (supermarkets, restaurants, etc.) to donate food

  • Pick up and deliver the supplies to the line for packing

  • Help us pack or distribute! It's a very uplifting experience you won't forget. Come once or as often as you can.
